Our Founder President was Uma Banerji and Founder Secretary was the late Zarina Kajiji… both fine ladies. Uma who is bedridden now was an educationist, the principal of the Cathedral Infant School and Zarina was an artist who has left behind beautiful miniature paintings. I believe there were 15 founder members.
Uma was President for two years and was succeeded by the late Vasumati Mapara who became District Chairman in 1969-70, (late) Jyoti Master, Sushma Thadani, (late) late Mariam Maskati, Jamna Batra, Shirin Mirchandani, late Ashrumati Shah and late Hansa Shah, were members.

In this decade, members tried their best to meet the objectives of Inner Wheel. Meetings were held in homes. They took up projects like running a Balwadi, Tree Plantation, helping the Happy Home for the Blind, interacted with the few clubs that were then, and there were get-togethers for friendship and fellowship.

Pres. (Late)Asha Anand was succeeded by Chandrakala Marfatia who became District Chairman in 1981, (late) Sumati Late). Thanawala, (Late)Jyoti Sheth, late Sadhna Agarwal, Kamala Todi, late Rehmat Fazalbhoy who also was District Chairman in 1985-86. Rehmat did splendid work for the Blind and for Multiplesclerosis and received several awards in her lifetime. Once again Ashrumati Shah and Sadhna Agarwal became Presidents and then Urvi Piramal.

In 1982, our member the late Sharayu Thakur became Chairman of the Housing (late) Board and in 1983 our Veenaben Gandhi was elected President of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs of India, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh.

In this decade, we expanded our activities to the Worli BDD Chawls. Sewing classes, medical clinic, a nursery were started there, eye and dental camps conducted, a primary care unit in Naigaon and dispensary in Worli Village were set up.

In1984 Kamala Agadi was President. Then in1985-86 Rehmat Fazelbhoy was District Chairman and Tillotama Toprani who later became District Chairman in 1989-90 was President. She was succeeded by me, Mumtaz Kachwalla, Vanita Jain, Shirley Lazarus, Nafisa Khorakiwala, Aruna Worah who served as District Chairman in 1994-95, Kamal Kanwar, Kanchan Hattangadi and Sabita Chuganee.

This was an outstanding decade because our club gave the district 3 District Chairmen viz. Rehmat, Tilottama and Aruna. We celebrated our Silver Anniversary. The Triennial Conference was held in Mumbai in 1992 in which we played an active role. It was then that IIW President Isabelle McNight attended our Charter Night Function, which was a special honour for us. Also our newsletter ‘Happenings’ was started then, as far as I remember. Our meetings were now generally held in one place, the NSCI, the Willingdon Sports Club and later for quite some time at the Nehru Planetarium.

We continued to carry out our social service projects and fellowship activities, participated in District projects, interacted with the many new clubs which were formed by then. One of our unique projects was helping the illiterate towards their aspiration to literacy which was carried out with the help of Dr. Venkatavardhan director of Nehru Planetarium. Sewing classes for deaf and dumb and Nutrition classes at Worli Village were held and our long lasting Vansda project was initiated in 1994. Many large donations were made for Callipers, Bio- Feedback Machine and many many other items to various organisations.

Our Presidents were Jayshri Sanghvi, Tilottama Toprani once again, Kavita Jain, Dhanlaxmi Gandhi, Nita Mehta, Jyoti Sheth, Shakera Quettawala, Manisha Choksi, Anjani Motiwala and Shirley Lazarus once again.
Not a single avenue where there was scope to do service, seemed left untouched. A variety of Health camps, Seminars on different subjects, diverse donations to several organisations, work in the villages in Vansda in a fairly big way continued. In 2004, the District Credential Committee meeting was hosted by us.

Amita Sanghavi, Sushma Tulpule, Urvashi Kadakia, Veena Thakkar, Asha Kanodia, Shilpa Bhartiya, Darshana Thacker, Shobha Bhatia, Vinita Agarwal were Presidents and now Bhavna Shah holds the key position.
This is on special deede too large amounts have been spent for multifarious activities – social service and fellowship has expanded… the good work goes on, and we are now celebrating 50th Year of “Golden Anniversary!

Over the years, we have participated in International, District and Inter-District activities and events – conferences, rallys, competitions etc., exchanged flags with Indian and overseas clubs. We have always tried to incorporate the International Inner Wheel Theme and District Inner Wheel Theme. Our club has received many accolades and awards. We have an Association President with us and have given the District five District Chairman. We have worked hand in hand with our Rotarians. Now Inner Wheel has been officially recognised by Rotary International as Partners in Service. We are happy to support each other.

So many years have gone by……in the initial years, times were frugal: Our fees were only Rs.100, a dozen roses cost Rs.20, a medical camp cost Rs.180, our Installation cost Rs.800, we paid hardly anything to the sewing teacher. We did simple things to raise money like collecting stamps and made albums with used cards. Today, we have grown …. big projects, big money is spent. …our Gowshala which is being fully donated will cost Rs.30 lakhs! But those were good and happy times too !! We saw grateful and delighted faces then and we see them now….and we feel satisfied and rewarded.

We have served society with sincerity, love and dedication. When I look back, these words come to my mind – children, women, widows, prisoners, drug addicts, deaf, dumb, blind, spastics, cancer, polio, HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis, education, upliftment, hospitals, villages…you name it and we have done it.
Time has gone by and our club has grown from strength to strength. We have 57 members now and there is a bonding which is stronger than ever before. We work with zeal, dedication and devotion and I can only see a bright and glorious future for our dear Inner Wheel Club of Bombay North.
